This is a question that many of my yacht engineering clients have asked me over the years. Which, is no surpise given that the 'Hatch Blank' is a requirement of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency Code of Practise.
Up until 2022, my answer has always been to fabricate a wooden blank with a wooden backing plate and stud bar. Whilst that has worked as a short term fix - it's certainly not a secure, elegant or long term solution.
The last time a customer posed the question, I decided it was time to do some further research and was surprised to find that there were no 'off-the-shelf' solutions to this essential requirement...

Gavin has worked on all types of vessels at different locations around the world with many varied roles. His esteemed engineering career began as an apprentice mechanical fitter with the Ministry of Defence.
After moving on from the MOD, Gavin went in to work for Sunsail Yacht Charters in various locations around the world.
Whilst working within the superyacht industry, Gavin progressed to a Y3 engineer and was promoted to the position of chief engineer on a 57 meter sailing yacht.
Since 2014, Gavin has been running a successful yacht engineering and repair business in Portsmouth, England.
